Worried About Cesc’s Comments

by David on May 14, 2010

I have to say that if you had asked me last week if Fabregas was heading to Barcelona this summer I would have said no. But his comments over the last couple of days have me worried that he is leaving.

In an interview in the Spanish newspaper Marca, Fabregas was quoted as saying:

“If I ever leave Arsenal it will be to play for Barcelona. I would like to go, whether they want me or not is another matter. I am 23 years old and I have a long career in front of me. I’ve never hidden the fact that playing for Barcelona is a dream that I would like to fulfil.”

Why open up that can of worms now if you don’t intend to go to the Nou Camp this summer?

My feeling is that Fabregas is heading to Spain before the summer with Yaya Toure and cash (£30m?) heading to Arsenal.

Do you think that Fabregas will leave Arsenal this summer?

This new batch of “Cesc wants his future sorted before the WC” stories make me of 2 minds:

1) He is paving the way to leave.
He is under contract until 2014. So is future is set. Arsenal have recently bumped his wages, given him a retroactive payment to cover the pay increase, so I can’t think he is pushing for more money or a longer contract. It is his decision about staying or not…
Unless, of course, there is boardroom talk about cashing in on him that we don’t know about but he does.

or

2) He is trying to arm twist Wenger into buying some stars without saying it outright so that the “sorting of his future” is knowing that the squad, in terms of talent, is going to be better the next year or so if he stays… otherwise, he wants out. All this is tandem with Wenger saying he wants to have any new signees sorted out before the WC.

Those are my impressions of the last few days of stories.

I think fabregas is hungry 4 tittles and personal honours so this is the only means to wake wenger up to shop for talents that will help him achieve his goal.

No player is bigger than the club if he wants to go let him go.If he still got 2 years to go on his contract I am sure arsenal who have to ask for big money.Arteta is good enough to fit in the arsenal team and if I were Wenger I would go for him if Fab goes.

Yes I do agree With BG. Cesc is either telling wenger “buy or I ‘ll leave” or he is convinced that Wenger wont buy the necessary talent ( even if he buys a defender and Chamakh comes in) and that he telling Barcelona to come and get him. But IMO if he wants to leave we should cash on him and get the windfall and buy Hazard and another good midfielder. He is hard to replace but never forget that we were invincible when he was in our Carling cup.

Or, if you read the quote, he’s just saying exactly what we already know, and have known for some time, when he leaves Arsenal he’d like to play for Barcelona. Hardly a revelation.

Please bear in mind that this is a quote he would have given in Spanish, to the Spanish press, in a year where Barcelona elect a new president.

actually i think cesc just about reaching his potential already. i dun see him getting significantly faster or stronger or more skillful. the portion he’s got left is his positioning, timing of runs, awareness, etc., which would make him better but not soo much better than what he is now. he’s already made tt ‘mid-career burst’ that the very good footballers have, like ronaldo, pires, etc. it’s tt time when something just clicks in them and sets them apart from the good ones.

n that being said, i think we can afford to be without cesc. i sincerely believe he is replaceable, with some tweaks in formation and mindset in the team. n i personallly don’t like it when a player gets too big for the team. it’s disruptive.

Hi fellow gunners, I don’t really know why we are getting scared of this news, as reggaebeatz already said, no one is bigger than the club, if he really wants to leave, let him, his position is not a problem to fill up. He can go whenever he wants but we should get some huge amount for him.

I think Tim Shields has it right. I read this quote as aspirational beyond where he is now. Exactly what you would expect from someone with his background. Of course he wants to play for Barca AFTER his time at Arsenal reaches a natural end.
