Wenger Signals End For Almunia

Almunia

Story Update: Arsene Wenger and Arsenal have released a statement that this story is false. The Arsenal statement reads:

Arsenal Football Club would like to clarify that quotes attributed to Arsène Wenger today in a Kenyan newspaper are not correct. Arsène Wenger did not grant a one-on-one interview to the newspaper and have kindly asked all media not to attribute any quotes from this source to him.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger all but signaled the end of the Manuel Almunia era at Arsenal telling the Kenyan newspaper the Standard:

“Manuel Almunia is a talented goalkeeper. “In training, he is superb, the only problem is that he gets nervous on big matches, thereby making silly mistakes. After the World Cup, we will be making an announcement on goalkeeping.”

That is not a ringing endorsement of Almunia. I expect that Arsenal will announce the singing of Fulham’s Mark Schwarzer soon, leaving the door open for Almunia to move onto another club.

He deserves a rousing send off. Unfortunately, he might not be qualified for a testimonial march. We all wish him well in the next club or his next endeavour.

This story ain’t true. First of all, it doesn’t sound like wenger and it has now been confirmed by arsenal.com that wenger gave no interview to any kenyan newspaper.

Now re-read the interview and ask yourself how could you make such a silly mistake?

So it has finally taken three years for Mr. Wenger to admit that the prat between our sticks is probably the worst goalkeeper in Arsenal’s history. Good riddance. If he had any sense he would spend £6m on Chris Kirkland. But I fear we are getting a geriatic from Fulham.
