Wenger Post Match Reaction: ‘We couldn’t convert our chances’

Here are some of Arsene Wenger’s comments after Arsenal were knocked out of the Carling Cup by lowly Bradford tonight:

on the game…
It’s disappointing, but congratulations to Bradford. They defended well [and] started stronger than us. In the second half of extra-time it was all us but we couldn’t convert our chances. They defended very well.

It was a typical cup game on a difficult but playable pitch. We lost on penalties, that unfortunately happened tonight. I cannot fault the effort. We have put the effort in [and] have given absolutely everything until the last minute. It was a typical English cup game and Bradford got on top of us in the end. We missed three penalties – that’s a lot to take.

They defended very well in their own half. The pitch was a bit slippery to get in behind. They defended very deep and played the ball forward. There was no space, no room.

on if he feared the worst when the game went to penalties…
When it goes to penalties, you know that you can win and you can lose. When you miss the first penalty, of course it’s difficult.

on if there is a psychological problem…
I don’t think so, no.

on under-performing…
I feel we gave a lot. It’s difficult to make the game the whole time. We played with a very offensive team. What is disappointing is [we played] basically over an hour with five strikers basically, and couldn’t score. We created a lot of different situations. You have to say they defended very well. It’s difficult to play this kind of game. I know people will say ‘it’s League Two’, but a cup game is a cup game. In football you always have a chance if you give everything. They did that tonight and we put ourselves in a difficult situation by being 1-0 down.

on where the result leaves the season…
Where it leaves our season is to focus on the next game. Sport is about that. Win the next game [and] focus on the next game.

on if the team are embarrassed…
You feel embarrassed when you don’t give everything. I feel the team did fight and will be more disappointed and frustrated.

AW will continue to be a failure if he refuses to make a major signing..that bald-vulture Gervinho will never deliver for Arsenal.he’s very wasteful.the entire team played so much rubbish tonight.i think its time the manager throw in the towel

Note that he did not say we have 5 quality strikers Scott!

        This is true…

We need a good replacement for AW ready to sign on first because a panic replacement is never a long term solution. We also need more bad results such that the die hard AW crowd becomes fewer. Worst thing which can happen is a final league position inside Europa league which the die hard crowd can still draw some support from. So I hope for one very bad season, league position 8 to 15, CL and FA knock outs similar to Bradford, such that AW and his supporters really get the message. And if mediocre Stan does not dig deep into his pockets then, any hope of glory in the coming seasons will be gone. Looking at Stan`s US franchises, they are sadly mediocre so I am not very hopeful.

Don’t you people listen to Wenger ? The bits of the pitch we had to play on were wet and slippery! Bradford had home advantage and knew where all the good bits were !
    That’s hardly fair.

I was happy with speculation this week on which fringe players might feature. I actually swiched off the television when I heard the team! The only positive from tonight is that it pushes wenger closer to the exit. The only transfer that matters hereon is the new manager!

He must be talking about a Champions League away match against a top European club……..hang on he’s talking about a team in the 4th tier of English football. Worked really hard ? the opponents defended well ? What a load of c##p. There’s a reason why they are down there and they simply do not have the players to defend to a standard where Arsenal should not be able to break them down. As for working hard that makes things much worse, if they were lazy that explains it but to work hard and still lose to a team in League 2 you must have seriously overrated players. You watch the match and feel p***ed off, then you listen to what the manager has to say about it and feel twice as p***ed off. If he’s trying to prevent a drop in morale I have news for him, telling them they played ok in losing to a League 2 team will only make them think they can’t beat Premiership opposition. Wenger needs to come out and say this team is much better than that, things will be shaken up and too many players are underperforming. Telling them this will do will not motivate them.

Hands up those of you who are surprised at the result!

As a boy I was taught to take penalties by the likes of Jack Rowley and Charlie Mitten of Manchester United. Jack once said to me “good footballers don`t miss penalties”. We pay these guys these guys tens of thousands of pounds a week and, if they can`t score from eleven yards with only a keeper to beat ,what hope do they have of scoring at all?
Don`t know what Henry thinks ,we will only know what he says….myself I`ve stopped thinking.

Reading will be thinking at least we’ve got Arsenal at the weekend, a chance to pick up some points. Let’s be honest both goals against West Brom were penalties that shouldn’t have been given. This is the worst Arsenal team that I can remember since the early 80s.

I think the solution is to just sack a coach that lacks confidence and believe on luck..i cant even imagine that we are not in the semifinal of a cup thats likely for us to win…this man is weak and he should be replaced with michael Laudrup,Arsene Wenger we dont want you again
