Wenger: Napoli won’t sell Cavani

by David on January 18, 2013

Arsene Wenger has admitted that Arsenal have little chance of signing Edinson Cavani from Napoli this month.

The Arsenal manager revealed yesterday that he likes the Uruguayan international, but he’s cooled talk of an arrival.

“Napoli are playing for the title and the Champions League in Italy,” the Arsenal manager commented on Friday.

“What is Napoli’s interest in selling Cavani? None, unless you say we will pay twice the price of what the player is worth…

“On top of that, all the players who can strengthen us are cup-tied in the Champions League.”

This deal makes no sense to me. It would cost Arsenal around £50m to buy Cavani, and then they will need to pay him. Add in say £150,000 a week and a four year contract and the cost of signing the striker becomes something around £80m. What in Arsene Wenger, or Arsenal’s board history would make anyone think that the Gunners would invest that kind of money in one player?
