Last week, there were some surprising comments from Arsenal Chairman Peter Hill-Wood who said that not playing in the Champions League next season would not be a disaster.
Arsene Wenger totally disagrees with his Chairman saying:
“For me it would be. I want to play with the best and we want to be in there – in the top four – and to play in the Champions League. Anything else would not be good enough.”
To some degree I am not surprised by the difference between the manager and the board. I get the sense that the Arsenal board is much more interested in making money than winning trophies. There are lots of rumors and stories floating around about the inactivity of the Arsenal board, which I think has more to do with Arsenal not signing anyone this month, than Arsene Wenger’s not interested in buying players.
Wenger’s rebuttal of Hill-Wood’s comment might well be the first sign of a split between Wenger and the board.
Should be a really interesting summer and it will not surprise to see a completely new board in place. Will have to see how that impacts the summer transfer market and the signing of van Perise to a new long-term deal.

Peter Hill wood is right & Arsene Wenger is a stupid coach!! He refuses to buy superstars this month which he must know that there no trophies since 2006 up to now. Wenger will be sacked without any trophy in d process if he doesn’t buy anyone. I love the gunners but not Arsene Wenger…
I think that you are clutching at staws. This is just the board and AW playing good cop, bad cop, for the benefit of he fans who they have managed to manipulate successfully for years. Can you remember the board boasting that there was money to sign players and AW coming out to say the direct opposite? They dont give an shite as long as they can keep the soap opera going.
Arsenal fans will surely fall for this reharsed comflict that doesnot exist as they are bed fellows. Fans get use to the current reality – Arsenal is on its journey to becoming a mid- table team.
