The transfer window opens up in a few hours and the question on everyone’s mind is will Arsene Wenger spend some money and reinforce an Arsenal team that has the chance to win the league this year?
With RVP probably out for the season, Walcott’s ongoing injury issues and Bendtner’s slow healing groin there is a consensus amongst Arsenal fans that Wenger needs to strengthen the team by signing another striker. Unfortunately he does not see it that way:
“Everybody is telling us to buy strikers, but we have scored 51 goals in 19 Premier League games so we have good balance somewhere. We are not against buying someone in January and we are looking, but we’ll see. It depends how some of the injured players recover – the likes of Fabregas, Denilson, Bendtner. It is hard in January to find the right players. As well as that, we have some very good players on the brink of the team – some of them were on the bench tonight and more were at home – so we must evaluate that too.”
Yes 51 goals in 19 league games is great, but Arsenal are not going to win the league with Arshavin playing center-forward. Eduardo has not shown that he can stand up to the physical play in the league week in and week out and Bendtner is still weeks away from being fit. Wenger needs to add a center-forward to his squad in January if the Gunners are to win a trophy this season.

We get carried away with a few 3 – 4 nil games to imagine we are Ok. But the truth is we need goal getters in games that the opponent is too mean and shuts us out. Remember the goal that has been declared the goal of the decade, Dennis Bergkamp against New Castle? Such are title winning Goals. You can win the title by scoring 1-0 in all the wins. 2 or three goals are just a flatter. Against Man U we needed a goal when we had them cornered, we did not get it and we paid heavily. Against Chelsea, we needed a goal in the first 40mins when we had then on the run. Again we lacked the quality in finishing and we ended up loosing badly. It was also the case against West ham when we conceded 2 a goal and Sunderland when we needed a goal to lift us up. It was same in Burnley. AW just buy the Players and if you asked me, you need to offload players like Eduardo and Bendtner and you can bring in a pair and that will not upset the balance and allow the young teammates to grow into the roles. I think a pair like Pazzini and Suazo will be a great value addition to out attack potency. Some of these players can be signed on loan to see whether they can fit in for a permanent move. I feel we lost 2007/2008 title to injuries and a thin squad. We were away at the top and we drew 4 matches and lost the 5th to our main rival Man United. There was a time the Injuries came again this season and we are coping right now but we have a chance to bolster our credibility. And it much worse when you fail to score in the Champion League consistently as you may make one or two stages and loose out in the most critical stage, Semi or Quarters. AW Please. Please sign Goal Getters and stop this ‘we are doing fine arguments’. And get someone to cover in the Midfield and Defense. We need silverware, even for us to keep the team together. Winning is not just youth but a mix. See what Asharvin arrival did….
“Yes 51 goals in 19 league games is great, but Arsenal are not going to win the league with Arshavin playing center-forward.” — This is one of the most invalid arguments I’ve heard . Where’s the logic?
The logic is that yes arsenal have been scoring goals this season, especially against the teams at the bottom of the table. But against the bigger teams, Arshavin is not the answer up front. think back to the Chelsea game where Terry ate up the smaller Arsenal forwards. Against Vidic it would be the same.
“terry ate him up,so will vidic” u make me sick,a gud analyst will knw that every match comes with its own perculiarity.against Chelsea he had a valid goal disallowed.against liverpool and villa i didnt know we went running to chelsea to lend us drogba so we culd win.why i share your view that i’ll like to see a new face in january,i don’t particularly buy your baseless argument about arshavin.
It’s not that I don’t like Arshavin. I think he is a great player. I just don’t view him as a #9/target man
Arshavin scored against ManU and against liverpool (both incredible goals)..And why should the goals only be scored by the forwards? Right now we get goals from all over the park and that is better than relying on a single striker (eg: torres for liverpool). While I’m not saying that we don’t need to buy a forward, it is not absolutely essential either. We are a team who primarily play with the ball on the ground which requires players with skill rather than strength and height. Having a strong CF could give us another option but it shouldn’t come at the cost of disrupting the flow that we have now.
Buy! Buy! Buy! Can somebody please change the record. January is a horrible time to try to get new players into a team. Especially major players as are being talked about in the media. It takes time to get settled in any new environment and the cut and thrust of the Jan-Mar period of the season is not the time to be bringing new players up to speed. Our season will be critically influenced between Jan 17th and Feb 17th. The games then could either blow us out of the water or (hopefully) set us up for a real chance to win something at the end of the season. No matter who AW might buy in Jan, he will not be up to speed for that period and would be a passenger throughout. A passenger we cannot afford to carry at that time. It’s up to those already in situ to get us through. Diaby has suddenly shown he can be a man and concentrate for 90 minutes (he always had the strength, skill and speed), now he can influence games. Eduardo needs to assert himself up front like he used to for Croatia, Nasri and Rosicky need to be the new Pires/Ljunberg and contribute their share of goals (not beyond their abilities) and our back 5 need to CONCENTRATE. By mid Feb, Walcott, Bendtner and most importantly Song will be back and ready to push on for the summit of Mount Silverware. If we’re still in contention at that stage, those who got us through the Jan-Feb period will be all the stronger for it and be more than capable to carry on.
By all means by for cover, or better still trust the kids and buy in Summer. AW has far more info to hand than any of us and he’s forgotten more than we’ll ever know about the matter so he’ll make the right decision whatever it turns out to be.
Happy new year!
wenger if want your dream to come true you better spend and make sure you buy atleast a striker and midfielder all so cos of injury problem remember any player can have an injury anytime be wise
a real target man will enable us to score even more goals and possibly to win the league…yes we are also challenging at the moment, which is great, but a striker like dzeko will certainly provide cover for players like arshavin and dudu to be more effective in attacks. so yes, i think we should still buy a target man even though we have proven we can score without one.
the top 4 are at the weakest that they will ever be, this is the time to go for it and steal the title.a
