The season so far

by David on October 7, 2009

fabregas2So we are about a fifth of the way through the season and with the International break here, I thought it was a good point to look back at the season so far.

Premier League

Arsenal in 5th place with 15 points from 7 games, with a game in hand over most of the teams above them. Overall Arsene Wenger has to be happy with where Arsenal are, especially considering the tough away schedule the Gunners have had to face so far this season.

The secret to Arsenal being successful this season is the home form. Three games, three wins and 14 goals scored is the sort of home form that Arsenal needs to be successful this year. The amount of goals that Arsenal have scored this season has been really enjoyable to see with 24 goals in 7 games.

The two leading scorers in the league are Fabregas and Vermaelen with four each. It is nice to get goals from different parts of the lineup, but I would be happier if Arsenal had a forward in the top 20 goalscorers list at this point of the season.

On the other hand the 10 goals that Arsenal have conceded so far is a major disappointment, especially when you consider that Arsenal have played one game less than the teams around them. Manchester United for example have played a similar schedule and have conceded eight goals in eight games. Chelsea have conceded six goals in eight games.

Biggest Surprise:

Vermaelen has been a great signing, not only for his defensive ability, but his goal scoring exploits have been a bonus.

Biggest Disappointment:

He had a promising start to the season, but it is clear that Diaby is not the answer to the Gunners problems in midfield.

Champions League

Arsenal is off to a great start in the Champions League with two wins from its first two games. Arsenal are one of only six teams to have maximum points so far. With a home and home series with AZ coming up this month, if Arsenal get four points they will all be assured of a place in the knockout stages.

Carling Cup

Kids looked great beating West Brom in the last round. Next up is Liverpool in which will be a really big test for them. Beating the likes of West Brom is nice, but I am really looking forward to seeing how the young Gunners do against an experienced Liverpool side in front of a full house at the Emirates.

What has been your biggest surprise about Arsenal’s play so far this season?

The goalkeeping arena seems to be the greatest surprise. The 1st choice goalkeeper – Alumna was messing up. he got injured, fabianski, the second choice was injured too. All we had left was Vito. Surprising Vito, the third choice goalkeeper came and seemed to be better than the other two. I do not think Alumna can get back the goal keeping spot with ease. I feel calmer with Vito, though i was scared when he suddenly became the only choice goal keeper.

agree on the review … my biggest surprise is how well 4-3-3 to play in Fabregas strength also beneficial for RVP & Arshavin strong run… this is considering typically we need a striker in Drogba or Adebayor mould and 2 super speedy wingers for that kind of formation…
Diaby is concerning … can’t wait for Nasri and Denilson to be back … I am pretty sure we will win something this year … as long as Arsene fielding the best players at the semifinal stage unlike last year

I thin this Arsenalteam are stron enough to win something this season.

okay, the games in Manchester which wie unfortunately lost are a very disappointed and we deserved to win at leats the game against United beacause we were much better then fergusons team at this day.

but overall i think we can win something this season every player has improved an Vermaelen is a great signing from Wenger, he defend very well an he can score , an Fabregas new Position in the new 4-3-3 makes him much stronger
