Point Gained Or Two Lost?

by David on January 27, 2010

After the draw with Villa tonight, I was on Twitter with some Arsenal fans, and that was the question that was asked. The consensus was that this was a point gained. Do you agree?

Arsene Wenger looked at it as two points dropped saying:

“I believe we dropped two points because we had clear chances but on the other hand it was a difficult game. They stopped us from playing when we had the ball and they played a long-ball game and closed us down, so it was difficult. We didn’t always find our passing game. We know when we come here what we get and we were not disappointed. [The result] keeps our unbeaten run going. If you put all the games together I believe it maintains the positive vibes. Overall, you have to win any game at the moment. Compared to Chelsea who won today, we dropped two points.”

It could have been or so different at Vila Park though as twice Arsenal saw shots come back off the woodwork. First Cesc Fabregas struck the post in first-half stoppage time and then Tomas Rosicky crashed a shot against the underside of the bar after the break.

The big news however was that Thomas Vermaelen hobbed off the pitch after 35 minutes with what appears to a serious injury. After the game Wenger said:

“Thomas Vermaelen we don’t know. There will be an x-ray. He is on crutches and it is a fibula injury. We have to check tomorrow morning if it is just a nerve or a broken bone”

Also our for the Man United game is Eduardo who strained a hamstring against Villa.

So it is on The Emirates this Sunday against Manchester United. Chelsea play on Saturday away to Burnley which they will win. So Arsenal will be 5 points back of Chelsea, heading into Sunday’s game. Arsenal need to cut that gap to 2 points before heading to Stamford Bridge next week. They cannot afford to be 5 points back of Chelsea heading into that game.

Arsenal`s reserves are a credit to Wenger`s youth policy but are not experienced enough to step into the breach against seasoned opposition. Some get their chance when the stakes are not so high to gain experience but in the main we don`t have a backstop we can rely on. There has to be a case for building a squad so that limited rotation can take place without affecting the style and rythmn of the first choice line-up. This ofcourse costs money but it also buys time for some (not all) of our younger players to be blooded and take their place in the senior squad. I am not suggesting a change of policy but a modification to the existing one.

Two points lost: 1) Smalling gone to manu, 2) We need another striking option.

Chelsea have 2 league games next week, away at Hull is the 2nd. Chances are we will be 5 points back heading to stamford bridge even if we do beat ManUre.

Actually Arsenal will win on Sunday, my prediction is 3-1, then go on to get a draw at the bridge and a win against Liverpool will see our title aspirations back on truck.

point gained for me….two teams in the area of 3rd to 6th spot in the final league positions.
Injury to vermaelen will confirm the shortcomings of a paper thin squad particularly at the back and upfront.
I believe that our middelweight fighting spirit will keep us in the hunt till march but the hevyweghts will have too much fo us in the end.
