WTF Is Stuart Pierce?

by David on April 25, 2012

Ok I know the technical answer to my question, but who does Stuart Pierce think he is saying that he might pick jack Wilshere for the Olympics regardless of what Arsenal say.

Here are Pierce’s quotes from the Mirror today:

“We’re in constant contact with Arsenal and we’ll see how this one rides. But, will any manager get a veto over who I select? Of course not.

“We would obviously let them know if their players are in contention and the dates they would need to be made available.

One down and about six to go as Manuel Almunia has confirmed he will leave Arsenal at the end of the season when his contract runs out.

Almunia told Sky Sports that he will quit the Gunners at the end of the season but that he wants to stay and play for another London team.

“I’m looking for a nice move next season,” the 34-year-old told Sky Sports News. “I want to start a new episode of my life. And now I’m free, I can do what I like..I’ve got lazy to move too far. Life here is fantastic.”

Thomas Vermaelen says he is not surprised by the emergence of his defensive partner Laurent Koscielny, despite early criticism of the Frenchman’s ability.

Koscielny moved to the Emirates Stadium in 2010 but initial problems adapting led detractors to claim he did not have the strength to survive in the Premier League.

However, this season he has been one of the Gunners most consistent players and a cornerstone of the defence alongside the Belgian vice-captain. Vermaelen insists that no one at the club doubted the 26-year-old’s talent.

Sunday night Robin van Persie has been named the Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year.

The Arsenal captain has scored 27 Barclays Premier League goals this season for the Gunners – his most fruitful campaign for the club – and was humbled to be recognised by his peers.

“If other people are saying it, it is special, but it is even more special if your opponents are saying it,” he told Press Association Sport.

“It is very special because you are playing against them week in week out and every single player does everything to win. In the end, if they make up their minds that I am the best player it is a big honour.”

Wenger tells Arsenal players to relax

by David on April 22, 2012

Arsene Wenger has called on Arsenal to relax and rediscover their free-flowing football over the closing games of the season.

However, he feels his side remain in the driving seat to secure third place in the Barclays Premier League.

The Gunners laboured through a goalless draw with Chelsea at Emirates Stadium on Saturday, unable to produce a convincing response to the shock home defeat by Wigan at the start of the week.

Wenger was already without injured midfield playmaker Mikel Arteta, while Czech winger Tomas Rosicky had to go off on 65 minutes after battling against a virus and Theo Walcott limped off with a hamstring injury which will end his season.

Arsenal Limping Towards Finish Line

by David on April 21, 2012

Arsenal are limping towards the end of the season both literally and figuratively after a 0-0 draw at home with Chelsea today. Some thoughts on the game:

This time last weekend Arsenal seemed a shoo-in to finish third in the league. But after losing to Wigan and drawing with Chelsea, Newcastle United have capitalized on Arsenal’s slip to close within three points of the Gunners with a game in hand. Suddenly finishing third is not a certainty anymore. And that is important because if Chelsea somehow go on and win the Champions League, finishing fourth does nothing for the Gunners. So the players need pick themselves up and win their remaining three games

Arsenal Injury News Ahead Of Chelsea Match

by David on April 20, 2012

Arsene Wenger updated the press today about Arsenal’s injuries ahead of this weekends massive game against Chelsea:

on Mikel Arteta…
It is season over for him but he doesn’t need surgery, which is what we were scared of. So he will be out for six to eight weeks. It is an ankle problem but just a sprain.

on Yossi Benayoun…

He is ineligible. But Koscielny is back from his two-match suspension.

I cannot pick up a newspaper without seeing an article about Arsenal being linked to some new summer signing.

But before we get into who Arsenal are signing, lets look first at their needs.

Goalkeeping
This was the one area that Arsenal fans were screaming for Arsene Wenger to fix via the transfer market 18 months ago. But Szczesny seems set to be the Arsenal number one for years to come. Behind him, Almunia and Fabianski are expected to move on this summer, creating the need for an experienced back-up goalkeeper.

Arteta Ruled Out For Season

by David on April 19, 2012

Mikel Arteta has been ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering ankle ligament damage during Monday’s game with Wigan.

Arsene Wenger admitted after the game that he feared Arteta’s injury was “quite a serious one”. And while scans have revealed no break, ligament damage means that Arteta will need several weeks of recovery and will definitely miss Arsenal’s last four games.

Arteta’s injury causes a selection headache for Arsene Wenger ahead of this weekend’s crunch game with Chelsea.

With Arteta out, Yossi Benayoun ineligible to play and Abou Diaby struggling for match fitness it could mean that Arsenal will start with a midfield three of Song, Rosicky and Ramsey.
