Laurent Koscielny Finally Signs For Arsenal

by David on July 7, 2010

It took a while but Arsenal finally completed the transfer of Laurent Koscielny from French Ligue 1 side Lorient. The fee was not disclosed but was probably under 10 million pounds.

Manager Arsene Wenger told Arsenal’s official website:

“Koscielny is a central defender with great ability who performed extremely well last season for Lorient. We identified him as a very strong centre half, who has made big progress very quickly. He has shown he is mentally strong, he’s a fighter and a very strong competitor. Koscielny is a great addition to our squad.”

Koscielny, who will wear the number six shirt, said:

“I’m very excited to be joining Arsenal. They are one of the biggest teams in Europe with many great players. I’m really looking forward to playing in the English Premier League and the Champions League with my new club. Also, in Arsene Wenger, Arsenal have one of the best managers in the world and I can’t wait to work with him and do my best for the Arsenal supporters.”

What do you think of the signing? Does he go straight into the Arsenal team? From everything I have read, Koscielny is a good player. My concern is that he is left-footed so that would mean that Arsenal would play with two left-footed center backs.

With a jersey that will say “6″ at the back, I am guessing he will partner Tommy Vermy. Both these guys were unknowns before they arrived. One gamble worked. Spectacularly. Lets hope this is more of the same. But I really wonder who Arsene is targeting next, given that he is on record saying any successful team need 4 world-class defenders. Of the three that we have, we know only Vermy fits that bill (JD still needs to prove himself).

Why on earth did Arsene agree to this stupid commentary gig in S. Africa when he knew he had an impt close season ahead? If it is an excuse to spy on players, I hope he makes it well worth it by trying for Ozil and Mertesacker.

Peace!
