Is A Three Man Back Line The Answer?

by David on November 14, 2012

The hottest formation on world football these days is a three-man back line and there are some reports that Arsene Wenger is considering dropping the traditional back-four in favor of a three at the back system to solve Arsenal‘s defensive problems.

After starting the season of strong defensively, Arsenal have taken a huge step backwards recently, conceding 12 goals in their last four games.

Using three at the back, in theory Arsenal will get their three best defenders, Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny and Thomas Vermaelen on the pitch at the same time. I would expect then that Sagna and Gibbs would move up into a wing-back position as none of the midfielders are strong enough defensively to play that position.

If Wenger and Bould can get Koscielny and Vermaelen back on track, the formation could work. But if they both continue to play like they have this season, it will not matter if Wenger goes with three at the back or six at the back. Arsenal will continue to leak goals until these two start playing like they did last season.

What do you think about Arsenal potentially going to a three-man back line? Good move or a sign of panic?

I guess Mert sweeping with TV and Kos covering the wing backs and bringing the ball out of defense.
Arteta covering the number 10 with 2 fast creative mids with great ball control. Either pushing left or right allowing for the overlapping full backs or the pass option inside. Guess Ox or Wilshere and Cazorla.
Up front Giroud with Pod or Walcott behind him.
Unless Wenger is thinking 3-1-5-1 with and extra man in the middle but then Pod and Walcott will be benched.

I think the paly should start with this formation
Podolski Giroud/Walcott
Cazarola
Gibbs Wilshere Arteta Sagna
Vermalen Mertstaker Kolschieny
Sceszny
And we should have Podolski ,Giroud/Walcott/Cazrola tracking back. They should we always upfront for any quick goal
and if anything goes wrong we can swithc bakc to our normal position with just one substitution of Walcott/Goroud with Gibs/TV/Mert/Kols/Sagna

So what happens when one or more of our top 3 centre backs get injured/suspended?
Do we fall back on Djourou and Squillacci???
