Cesc Fabregas Gets New Contract

by David on April 26, 2010

The British media are all over a story about how Arsenal have given Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas a £3 million payment and increased his wages by nearly 50% to £110,000-a-week.

To understand this deal you need to go back to 2006 when Fabregas signed an eight-year contract, which was worth an initial £60,000-per-week with annual increments built in.

Within two years, Fabregas started to show the form that makes him one of the best midfielder players in the world. And as athletes do, he wanted to renegotiate hos contract.

So Arsenal did two things. They agreed that Fabregas was underpaid compared to the other stars in the Premier League so they increased his base wage (which had risen to £80,000-per-week) to £110,000-a-week making him the highest paid player at Arsenal.

The second step the Arsenal board did was was they agree to backdate the contract two years. This meant that Fabregas was due about £30,000-a-week, for each of those two years or £3 million.

The spending of this kind of money for Fabregas shows that Arsenal are starting to losing those purse strings a little. Seventeen players have been given improved contracts this season and Arsenal’s wage bill is believed to have increased to £115m, the third highest in the Premier League.

What do you think of Fabregas’s new contract?

He is worth every penny and if they do not doc up, they have to pay the price of loosing him , and that will be sad for Gunner fans. Stop loosing “key” players!!!!!!!!!

Great, 3rd biggest wage bill – with half our squad being teenagers!? WTF??

Fair point, but in this case I think its good we spent the money to keep him happy.
Theo getting 60k pw is just ridiculous and Im sure there are many similar wages for young, unproven players in our 1st team squad.

He might leave for other reasons, but Arsenal has to make sure his salary isn’t one of them.

Definitely would be (or is) the right thing to do.

He deserve that. Silvestre gets 50 k per week and he is the worst rubbish who gave nothing to Arsenal achievement.

3rd highest wage bill?
Youngest average team.
Comfort zone anyone… No wonder we’ve won f all in years!
Where’s the incentive to do well?
Your underachieving, here’s a payrise. Pathetic.

Cesc Fabregas deserve this contract. He has done everything in his capacity at his age for arsenal. And I believe he’s going to do more. Arsenal should hold him & dont let go. I know that one day(very soon) he’s going to be the best player in the world.

Wenger totally lost his plot. Don’t want to use transfer budget to seek the better player but improves contract on several idiots who play up and down every week. This is getting embarrassing. No matter J.E.T can use mercedes benz at the age of 19. Where’s the money!!!????

YOu know what ? 110,000 is less for Cesc

3rd highest wage bill is not true. Man City and Chelsea spend more on each of their top 5 players tha we do on Cesc. That is why the article says “believed” not “has.” I would be willing to bet monet that Tottenham, Man U, Chelsea, Man City, and Liverpool all spend much more on their starting 11.

Thank you! This is entirely right… smart moves (aka marouane chamakh) will elevate arsenal and quell the money grubbing whores that are Man City and Chlesea (Man United are already f-ed for money)

Wait a second. Didn’t we come third this season? So why is having the third highest salary such a bad thing? Try to be logical… This is GREAT news. I’m 100% sure Cesc will be with us for at least the next year, infact I think he will be with us for the next 3 years. By that time the new wave of brilliant players will be almost as good as Cesc is now. The difference being the s in players. Ramsey and Wilshere will be the best two British midfielders around by the time they are 21.

Fabregas is a player with exceptional quality both in leadership, so he deserves more than that even. His football quality is second to none as far as EPL is concern, we should close our eyes and give him 150,000 GBP a week before we loose him to Barca or Madrid

not too excited abt the wage bill though, as it’s not a great squad, but seems to be paying quite large wages.

Most of the boys deserve a pay rise but Diaby,Fabianski,Silvestre and Almunia need a pay cut…..too much money for doing nothing. These guys should know that they are playing for one of the best teams in the world. They play like Cocoa cola league players. They either shape up or ship them out.
