Gunners In Seventh Heaven

by David on February 5, 2012

Could not resist the headline!! After the woeful performance against Bolton in midweek, I asked that “ unless Robin van Persie scores where are the goals coming from?” Well Saturday we got our answer as three other Arsenal players, besides Robin van Persie got on the scoresheet.

Some thoughts on the game

  • It was the second hat-trick of the season for Robin van Persie, who knows has 28 goals this season in all competitions and a remarkable 22 in the league. When the UEFA player of the year nominations are announced later this year, van Persie is going to be up their with Messi and Ronaldo as the best goal scorers in Europe.

Here are some of Arsene Wenger’s comments after tonight’s disappointing draw away to Bolton:

on the result…
We feel we have dropped two points because we had chances to win the game. But we produced a decent game against a difficult opponent who gives you the ball, marks tight and waits for their chance. We took all of the risks and we were a bit unlucky as well because we hit the bar, the post and missed some great chances. In the end we took a gamble to play four strikers and we nearly got caught in the last five minutes from a Bolton chance.

Not sure where to start with this one. How can Arsenal be held scoreless by a team that had only kept two clean sheets all season? Easy, unless Robin van Persie scores where are the goals coming from?

Tonight Wenger sent out a midfield three of Song, Arteta and Ramsey with Walcott and AOC out wide. None of those five players are known for their goal scoring ability. Tonight was also the first time that I realized that Wenger has not replaced Fabregas and his goal scoring ability from midfield. Fabregas has scored 15 goals already for Barcelona this season. I wager a bet that the Arsenal midfield collectively does not score 15 goals this season.

Two nil down at half-time, I thought that Arsenal’s hopes of winning the FA Cup was gone for another season. But a great second half comeback so the Gunners win 3-2 and progress to the 5th round of the FA Cup.

Some quick thoughts on the game:

  • It was a couple of bad defensive mistakes that let Villa take a half-time lead, as once again Arsenal conceded a goal from a cross into the box. Training ground routine says you send two players out to cover a short corner, not one and that mistake led to the first goal.

Here are some of Arsene Wenger’s comments after today’s defeat to Swansea:

on the game…
The game was difficult because Swansea played well. It was also decided by some strange decisions from the referee, who gave a penalty that was complete imagination.

From then on I thought there were some odd turning points, like when we came back to 2-2 and made a defensive mistake straight away. It looked similar to Fulham to me, the lack of appreciation for the ball. Our defensive performance was not good enough and that’s why we lost the game.

Big Three Points Dropped At Swansea

by David on January 15, 2012

I had a feeling that today’s trip to Swansea would be a difficult one. It is a tough place to go and get a win, but the way that Arsenal have been playing I fully expected them to get at least a draw. So to lose 3-2 is a major disappointment. With the defeat, Arsenal are now four points behind Chelsea for that all important fourth Champions League side.

Here are Arsene Wenger’s comments after today’s defeat at Craven Cottage:

on the key decisions…
I think it was 100 per cent a penalty on Gervinho from Senderos in the first half. The referee had a massive influence on the game like that. We have played many games recently where if it had gone our way we would not have been in trouble and would have stayed with 11 on the pitch.

Here are some of Arsene Wenger’s comments after today’s 1-1 draw with Wolves:

on the result…
It is frustrating but I am more frustrated by the result than the performance and the spirit. You cannot fault the attitude or the commitment or the desire to win the game. We missed a great opportunity but we just have to keep going and take the positives out of the game today.
