There should be no debate as to who the Premier League Player of the Year is this season. Robin van Persie has propelled himself into the conversation about the top goal scorers in the world, as his two goals helped Arsenal shock Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield today.
Cannot overstate how good RVP has been this season. He has now scored 25 goals in 27 Premier League matches this season. And while RVP deservedly gets all the headlines, Arsenal would not have won without Wojciech Szczęsny who was brilliant. Read more...(316 words, estimated 1:16 mins reading time)
Here are some of Arsene Wenger’s comments after today’s thrashing of Spurs at the Emirates.
on the performance…
Arsenal are alive more than anybody thought before the game. Today we gave a performance that on the spirit side, the technical side, the drive of the whole team, on the style of the game we want to play everything was perfect despite a very bad start. I felt in the first five minutes Tottenham started well, after that it was all us for 85 minutes. Read more...(519 words, estimated 2:05 mins reading time)
It’s was by far the best 60 minutes that Arsenal have played all season as they came from 2-0 down to beat Spurs 5-2 at the Emirates today.
For the opening 30 minutes Arsenal were poor as Spurs scored two goals. The midfield gave them much too much room and the high line that Arsenal like to play hurt them again.
But the Arsenal players did not cave and instead started to play themselves back into the game and two goals in two minutes from Sagna and van Persie turned this North London derby around. Read more...(402 words, estimated 1:36 mins reading time)
Arsenal’s miserable week continued as they lost 2-0 to Sunderland in the FA Cup, a result that means that Arsenal have now gone seven successive season without winning a trophy.
While this was a better performance than we saw in the San Siro in midweek, it could not really be any worse, Arsenal were still poor today. Lacking that creativity to break down Sunderland.
Unbelievably, after losing defenders Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker in the past week with injuries, Wenger was forced into a change after less than ten minutes when Francis Coquelin appeared to suffer a hamstring problem and Sebastien Squillaci came on. To add insult to injury, Squillaci had to be replaced in the second half due to an injury he picked up. Read more...(306 words, estimated 1:13 mins reading time)
Here are some of Arsene Wenger’s comments after last nights disaster in the San Siro:
on the result…
It was of those nights you never forget. It is our worst night in Europe, we were punished and deservedly so. We were very poor offensively and defensively. We were beaten everywhere. There was not one moment in the 90 minutes we were really in the game. What made it worse is that we had to chase the game. It was always the same problem, balls over the top and we were well beaten. It is hard to find words to describe Arsenal’s performance at the San Siro last night. That was worse than the Old Trafford massacre. That was total capitulation on the worlds biggest stage
So many questions from the team selection to the way the players played. Why not start Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain whose pace would have troubled the slower Milan full-backs? Why play Rosicky?
The goals were a comedy of error’s.
Milan’s first goal came from a poor clearance by Szczesny. They Koscielny and Vermaelen were guilty of ball watching as Emanuelson chipped in Boateng and his shot went in off the cross bar. Read more...(474 words, estimated 1:54 mins reading time)
Here are some of Arsene Wenger’s comments after the win at Sunderland:
on another happy ending for Thierry…
He finished the story of the legend today in the championship; I hope he will add some in the Champions League on Wednesday now. Certainly he got us the three points in a difficult game where Sunderland were resilient, well organised and tried to catch us on the break every time. You could see that they have a lot of spirit in their side. It was also on a very difficult pitch. We had a lot of the ball but we couldn’t create a lot because our passing was good but it was very difficult to get into their defence. Read more...(323 words, estimated 1:18 mins reading time)
All the ingredients were there for another disappointing away performance; weather, tough ground to get a result and going one down with twenty minutes to go. But Arsenal did not buckle, they fought hard and got two goals they needed to pick up a massive three points and move into that all-important fourth place in the league.
With Liverpool imploding, AVB out hid depth and Newcastle simply not good enough, fourth place is there for the taking.
Arsene Wenger receives a lot of stick here for his lack of interest in spending money in the transfer window, but he made three substitutions against Sunderland that decided the match. Read more...(272 words, estimated 1:05 mins reading time)
Here are some of Arsene Wenger’s comments after today’s thrashing of Blackburn Rovers at the Emirates:
on a memorable afternoon…
I felt that recently we had quite good performances but did not get the results. Today we got the performance and the result, which is ideally what you want. I do not give much importance to the seven goals, it is just important we won and played well.
on Oxlade-Chamberlain and Walcott…
As you know, they are English! I feel providing today was as important as scoring. The flanks provided very well and scored through Alex. Robin is an exceptional football player and you could see that with his movement in the box, which could be shown in every football school. When you feed him in the box, he is deadly.
