Barcelona Still Chasing Fabregas

by David on May 31, 2010

Barcelona president Joan Laporta is still using the media to keep the pressure on Arsenal to sell them Cesc Fabregas on the cheap.

Various reports say that Arsenal have told Barcelona they can have Fabregas for £80 million, while Barcelona are reported to be willing to only pay £30m.

Speaking to reporters in Spain Laporta said:

“We are being prudent in the sense that we are not going to do things that are not logical. We have a player who has expressed his intention of coming to Barcelona. He (Fabregas) has said it and I want to thank him publicly for that decision.”

As he continued with the interview Laporta seemed to wiling to find a compromise with Arsenal saying:

“We are working on it. We will try to achieve his signature and if we don’t get there with time, at least we will have opened a path. The possibility is always there but the other part [Arsenal] has to defend their interests and perhaps has a different strategy. We are trying to find a halfway point for both sides to agree.”

My personal opinion is that Fabregas has played his last game for Arsenal. After spending the summer with the Barca boys in the Spanish national team I cannot see him returning.

All that leaves is the nitty gritty of the transfer deal. I cannot see Barca paying £80 million cash for Fabregas, but I could see a deal for £25-30 million plus one or two players to make the total value of the deal £50 million

I’m losing faith in the Arsenal Heiracy! Why on earth do we let Barca get away with this blatent tapping up? Is it because were still owed money from Henry and Hleb?
I understand the silence to the fans, could be detrimental to any new signings (add a few quid on the price) but a complaint MUST be made to UEFA!
Not that Platini would probably do anything about his favourate club in his favourate league, but it needs to be done!!

Well said Roy. I’m beginning to dislike Barcelona together. Their hidden agenda is completely unacceptable. Flip side, Barca would laugh at us offering £30m for Iniesta. Besides a player can’t just decide to leave and thats that, he has a contract to ‘respect’ and uphold. Bojan and Yaya don’t want to be Arsenal players, and to be honest I can’t really name anyone who would want to leave them for us, unless gaurenteed first team football was regular for them. The tapping up disregards any mutual management of the process for the Barca board. Complaints needed!

Totally agree Roy. Both Spanish teams use the media to tap up players in a way that would never be acceptable in the U.K.

Stop it, no one’s been tapped up. Cesc has outgrown Arsenal’s limited ambition and wants a new challenge. This is what everyone’s been saying over the last few years. If you don’t challenge for the top, top players lose interest. Wenger will make a good deal, he just needs time to weigh options.
