Arsenal Team News For Bayern Match

by David on February 19, 2014

Midfielder Mikel Arteta is suspended and will miss out as Arsenal tackle holders Bayern Munich in the Champions League last 16 on Wednesday night and Arsene Wenger could ring the changes at the Emirates Stadium.

The Frenchman, whose side beat Liverpool 2-1 in the FA Cup on Sunday, could make as many as seven changes for the clash with Pep Guardiola’s runaway Bundesliga leaders.

Arteta, Yaya Sanogo, Nacho Monreal, Carl Jenkinson, Lukasz Fabianski, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Lukas Podolski could all miss out, the latter two having netted against in the Gunners FA Cup triumph.

Tomas Rosicky replaces Arteta in the matchday squad while Wojciech Szczesny is likely to return in goal in place of Lukasz Fabianski.

Additionally, Jack Wilshere (stiff back), Santi Cazorla (ill), Kieran Gibbs (muscular problem), Bacary Sagna (tired) and Olivier Giroud (tired) are all poised to return to the starting XI having only been substitutes on Sunday.

As such, defensive duo Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny, French destroyer Mathieu Flamini and schemer Mesut Ozil are likely to be the only players to retain their starting spots.

Provisional squad:
Fabianski, Jenkinson, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Monreal, Flamini, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Wilshere, Gnabry, Rosicky, Podolski, Szczesny, Giroud, Gibbs, Sagna, Ozil, Sanogo, Bendtner.

You guys worry too much about Giroud. Where my concern is, is with Monreal and Jack. A critical look at our recent losses makes it abundantly clear that while jack has lost confidence & focus, monreal is too naive for an experienced, fluid and attacking side like Bayern. Fielding these two players would amount to booking for a disaster.

Spot on with regards to Monreal and Wilshere. Jack’s been below par for a number of games.
