Arsene Wenger is not waiting until the end of August to do his transfer shopping this year. Hell, he isn’t even waiting until the season has ended!
With Lukas Podolski already signed, reports from France say that Arsenal have reached an agreement with Rennes for midfielder Yann M’Vila. The transfer fee is reported to be around €22 million (£17.7 million) . That transfer fee would of course be a record for Arsenal, easily surpassing the £15 million Arsenal paid Zenit St. Petersburg for Arshavin in in 2009.
Combined Podolski and M’Vila cost about £28million, a bargain in today’s market and their signings send a clear signal to Robin van Persie about the club’s ambitions.
M’Vila held talks with Inter Milan last week but has since decided he wants to join the Gunners, whether they secure Champions League football or not.
On Twitter I asked whether M’Vila was a replacement for Song, or whether the two of them could play together. The consensus was that Arsenal can play them both together in the middle of the park.
While Podolski and M’Vila will be the two big names that Arsenal sign this summer, they will not be the only players signed.
Arsenal have been strongly linked with Ajax center-back Jan Vertonghen, but recent reports suggest that he will be joining that other North London club.
Arsenal have also been linked with Blackburn’s Junior Hoilett and Fulham’s Clint Dempsey, while an experienced goalkeeper will need to be brought in to replace Almunia and Fabianski with Swansea’s Michel Vorm being the name most mentioned for that position.
