Arsenal beat Celtic 3-2 today to retain the Emirates Cup. And for a change it was two English players who were the stars for Arsenal.
Theo Walcott and Jack Wilshere were terrific in front of England boss Fabio Capello and it would not be a shock to see them both be named in the full England squad next week for the Hungary game.
It took Walcott just three minutes to open up the Celtic defence as Carlos Vela swept the Gunners into the lead. A great ball from Wilshere played Walcott into the right side of the Celtic penalty area, and his shot across goal was turned in at the far post by Vela.
Wilshere, who was starting his second game of the weekend in central midfield, was terrific and almost scored when his stunning first-half volley smashed against the crossbar.
But we also saw the inexperience of Wilshere are he pulled down Marc-Antoine Fortune in the box to concede a needless penalty. But luckily for Arsenal it was not a costly mistake as former Manchester City striker Georgios Samaras ballooned his spot-kick over the crossbar.
Before then Arsenal had gone two up when Celtic failed to clear a corner and full-back Bacary Sagna blasted an 18-yard angled drive inside the near post. Substitute Samir Nasri then made it 3-0 after 51 minutes following more good work by Walcott down the right.
Almunia, playing his first game of the preseason was beaten on 73 minutes when Murphy knocked the ball in after it rebounded across the six-yard box. Then with eight minutes left, Ki Sung-yueng made the score closer than the game was.
So two games at home in the Emirates Cup and 4 goals scored, which is great. I am not so happy about the 3 goals conceded as I thought that defence was supposed to be an Arsenal focus this pre-season?
